The debut novel from Clem Hunter is set in a village in the south of England, where the murder of a pillar of the community is investigated by Olive Jones, who is finding her feet as a DI while managing some personal issues. The plot is filled with twists and turns, without ever stretching reality, and there are more deaths to follow.
Alongside gentle humour and well-drawn portraits of village life and its characters, darker elements simmer beneath the surface. Olive and her DS, Anthony, are engagingly human, functioning as professional detectives determined to apprehend the murderer eventually.
A very satisfying read.

This was such a great combination of in-depth procedural crime-solving and edge of your seat moments, with the pleasant surprise of a few laughs thrown in along the way!
I sometimes find crime fiction a bit gory, melodramatic and far-fetched but this felt very human with some lovely characters.
Highly recommend and I can’t wait to see what is next in the Olive Jones series!
